Governor Roy Cooper will face off against Republican candidate Thom Tillis in the November 2018 primary.
The winner of the contest will face Democrat Roy Cooper in November 2020.
Cooper will be the first Republican governor in U.S. history to take office in 2018 and 2020.
He was elected governor in 2017 with an anti-abortion platform.
He has faced numerous scandals in his first year in office, including a 2015 investigation by the Charlotte Observer that revealed that he’d spent millions of dollars of public funds on personal expenses.
Cooper’s campaign declined to comment on his race, and the governor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
North Carolina’s Democratic Party has endorsed Cooper for the Democratic nomination for governor.
